WWDC's Origami Demo Was a Wink: Apple Is Prepping Developers for a Foldable iPhone

Apple never said the word ‘foldable’ at WWDC 2026, but the evidence is stacking up that iOS 27 is built for one. Developers digging through the beta found new framework strings — foldState, angleDegrees, and a system key reporting the count of built-in displays — that make little sense for any iPhone that exists today. Every iPhone ever shipped has exactly one screen; an API designed to answer otherwise points squarely at new hardware.

The developer-facing messaging reinforced it. Apple pushed resizability hard: iPhone Mirroring on Mac now supports stretching apps to landscape ratios no current iPhone produces, and a new Resizable iOS Simulator lets developers test across what Apple repeatedly called ‘a dynamic range of sizes and aspect ratios.’ The strategy is a deliberate contrast with Android, where foldable owners spent seven years finding out which apps break. Apple is making adaptive layouts a baseline expectation before the device ships, using the gap between announcement and launch to ready its entire ecosystem.

The hardware itself is an open secret: a book-style ‘iPhone Ultra’ with a 7.7–7.8-inch inner display, a 5.3–5.5-inch cover screen, a near-4:3 unfolded ratio, and a rumored ~$2,000 price, expected alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September. Incoming CEO John Ternus — who oversaw the device’s development and takes over September 1 — would unveil it as his first major act. Even the keynote’s sample app, an AI-powered origami tutorial about creasing and folding paper, reads as a knowing signal rather than a coincidence.
