Waylandcraft Mod Embeds a Full Wayland Compositor Inside Minecraft

A new Linux-only Minecraft Java Edition mod called Waylandcraft turns the game into a working Wayland compositor, letting players launch real desktop applications as windows that live inside the Minecraft world. The mod supports standard compositor behaviors like drag-and-drop between windows and pinning content—such as a video player—to the player’s HUD.

Released under GPL-3.0-or-later and targeting Minecraft 26.1.2, the project is client-side only and does not run on macOS or Windows. It’s a novelty hack with a serious technical core: implementing the Wayland protocol well enough to host arbitrary Linux GUI apps inside a game’s render loop blurs the line between game mod and display server, and shows how far modern modding toolchains can be pushed.
