Uber's $1,500 Per-Tool AI Coding Cap Reveals What Engineering Time Is Worth

Uber has imposed a $1,500 monthly token budget on each agentic coding tool its engineers use, applied separately per product so Cursor spending doesn’t eat into Claude Code spending. The policy followed Uber burning through its 2026 AI budget in just four months — a budget set in 2025, before coding agents became aggressive token consumers.

Simon Willison frames the cap as a rational alternative to the internal “tokenmaxxing” leaderboards that gamify maximum AI consumption. The number also gives a public benchmark for what large employers think these tools are worth: assuming two tools in active use, the $36,000 annual ceiling per engineer works out to roughly 11% of Uber’s median U.S. software engineer compensation package of $330,000.

Willison notes his personal usage runs about $1,000/month against each of Anthropic and OpenAI, but he pays only $100 per provider through subsidized individual plans that aren’t offered to enterprises like Uber. Under Uber’s policy he’d still have around $500/month of headroom per tool, suggesting the cap is calibrated above typical heavy-user demand rather than as a hard squeeze.
