Stripe pressure pushes Kickstarter to ban adult content, creators say

Kickstarter quietly rewrote its Mature Content rules around May 11 to prohibit a broad slate of NSFW material, including photo-realistic sexual imagery, implied nudity, MILF/DILF content, and depictions of genitalia or buttocks. The previous policy banned only ‘pornographic content,’ making the new list a sharp expansion of restrictions on what creators can crowdfund.

Creators say the shift traces back to Stripe, Kickstarter’s payment processor. Emails sent to project owners as early as March 2026 warned that Stripe would independently review any adult or NSFW campaigns and could terminate them mid-funding or even after a successful raise. The reversal is striking given that Kickstarter launched a ‘Kickstarter After Dark’ newsletter spotlighting adult projects in September 2025.

The move fits a wider pattern of payment infrastructure dictating platform content policy. Steam and Itch.io purged large catalogs of adult games in 2025 under pressure from Visa, Mastercard, and banking partners. As processors increasingly act as de facto content moderators, the chokepoint for online speech is shifting from platforms to the financial rails beneath them.
