Nvidia Buys Hugging Face for $12.9B, Betting Big on Open-Source AI

Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the open-source AI model and dataset hub, for $12.9 billion — its second-largest deal ever, trailing only December’s $20 billion purchase of Groq assets. The move pushes the chipmaker further up the AI stack, extending its reach from GPUs into the software and community layer where models are built, shared, and deployed. CEO Jensen Huang pledged that the platform will stay open to the entire ecosystem, framing the deal as a way to scale Hugging Face’s infrastructure and widen access for developers and institutions.

Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue said he initiated talks over the summer, having concluded that open-source AI had hit an inflection point and needed more scale, resources, and visibility than the company could muster alone. The transaction closed quickly after that approach. For Nvidia, the acquisition reinforces its pitch that it is more than a hardware vendor, deepening its stake in the generative-AI boom that made it the world’s most valuable company.

The deal lands shortly after a security breach at Hugging Face that Delangue attributed to engineering errors — notably, the company used an Nvidia-tuned version of a Chinese open model to remediate the incident. Both executives leaned into the episode as an argument for open models rather than against them, with Huang claiming that transparent, community-driven defense gives protectors an ‘asymmetric advantage’ over attackers. The framing is convenient for a buyer, but the underlying tension — concentrating a nominally neutral open platform under a single dominant vendor — is likely to draw scrutiny.
