Moonshot pauses new Kimi signups as K3 demand outstrips GPU capacity

Moonshot AI has halted new subscriptions for its Kimi service after demand for the recently launched Kimi K3 model pushed its GPU fleet to the edge of capacity within 48 hours. The company says current subscribers are unaffected; the freeze applies only to new sign-ups, which it plans to reopen in batches as it brings more compute online.

The move is a familiar capacity-management play among AI providers: rather than degrade quality of service across the board, Moonshot is rationing access to protect the experience of paying users already on the platform. It frames the pause as temporary and tied directly to hardware limits rather than any change in strategy.

Alongside the freeze, Moonshot is restructuring its subscriptions into two tiers — a general Kimi Membership covering Web, App, and Work, and a separate Kimi Code Membership aimed at coding workflows. Splitting the plans lets the company allocate GPU resources more precisely to different usage patterns, which tend to have very different compute profiles, and should make load easier to manage as it scales.
