Meta unlocks ADB on retired Portal devices, opening door to community reuse

Meta has enabled Android Debug Bridge access on its discontinued Portal video-calling devices, giving owners a path to repurpose hardware that would otherwise become e-waste after the company killed off the product line. ADB access is the standard developer interface for Android-based devices, allowing shell commands, sideloaded packages, and deeper system inspection than a locked consumer device normally permits.

The move matters because Portals run a customized Android build on capable hardware, and unlocking ADB makes it feasible for the community to install alternative software, repurpose the devices as smart displays or dashboards, and extend their useful life well beyond Meta’s support window. It is a relatively rare example of a vendor voluntarily loosening restrictions on abandoned hardware rather than letting it brick out.

For users, the practical upshot is that existing Portals are no longer dead ends. For the broader conversation around right-to-repair and post-EOL device support, it sets a modestly encouraging precedent that other vendors discontinuing connected hardware could follow.
