Linux From Scratch: Build Your Own Distro from Source, One Package at a Time

Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a long-running educational project that walks builders through assembling a complete, custom Linux system directly from source code rather than installing a prepackaged distribution. The core LFS book serves as the foundation, teaching how the pieces of a working system fit together by having you compile each one yourself.

The project has grown into a family of companion books that extend the base. Beyond Linux From Scratch (BLFS) turns a bare LFS install into a usable desktop or server, while Automated Linux From Scratch (ALFS) offers tooling to script and manage builds. Specialized variants cover multilib 32-bit support (MLFS), gaming stacks like Steam and Wine (GLFS), and supplemental packages beyond BLFS (SLFS).

Rounding out the ecosystem are supporting resources: a Hints collection for customizations not covered in the main books, a centralized Patches repository, an Editor’s Guide documenting the development process, and a Museum archiving older LFS and BLFS releases.
