Google rebrands NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook, adds native code execution

Google is renaming NotebookLM, its research and note-synthesis tool launched at I/O 2023 under the codename Project Tailwind, to Gemini Notebook. The product now claims more than 30 million users and 600,000 organizations. It stays a standalone app but is being pulled deeper into Google’s broader Gemini ecosystem, with access and creation already available inside the Gemini app and cross-app syncing between the two experiences. Integration with AI Mode in Google Search is planned next.

The more substantive change is technical: each notebook is getting a sandboxed cloud computer that lets the model write and run code against a user’s own sources, enabling grounded data analysis and new output formats. That capability is live for Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with the relevant access tiers, and is set to reach web Pro users in the coming weeks.

The rename signals Google’s push to consolidate its consumer AI products under the Gemini brand rather than maintain separately-named tools, while the code-execution feature moves the product beyond summarization toward analytical workloads competitors are also chasing.
