Cirrus Labs Acquired by OpenAI, Cirrus CI Shutting Down June 1

Cirrus Labs, the bootstrapped developer tooling company behind the Tart virtualization platform and Cirrus CI, is being acquired by OpenAI. The team will join OpenAI’s Agent Infrastructure group, pivoting their focus from cloud-native developer tools to building environments for AI coding agents.

Founded in 2017 without outside funding, Cirrus Labs built a notable track record: an early multi-platform CI/CD system supporting bring-your-own-cloud, and Tart, which became the dominant virtualization tool for Apple Silicon. The founder frames the move as a natural extension of the same mission - building developer environments - now aimed at agentic workflows rather than human ones.

The practical fallout: Cirrus CI shuts down June 1, 2026. No new customers for Cirrus Runners, though existing contracts will be honored. On the upside, all source-available tools including Tart, Vetu, and Orchard will be relicensed under more permissive terms, and licensing fees have been dropped.
