California declares emergency over volatile chemical tank at GKN Aerospace plant

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Orange County after a 7,000-gallon tank of methyl methacrylate began heating uncontrollably at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove. An inoperable valve has prevented crews from stabilizing the tank, whose internal temperature is climbing roughly one degree Fahrenheit per hour despite external water cooling. Officials are openly preparing for two failure modes: a rupture that spills the flammable plastic precursor into the surrounding lot, or thermal runaway that detonates the tank and ignites neighboring fuel and chemical containers.

Thousands of residents within a one-mile radius have been evacuated, schools are closed, and major road exits near the site are blocked. Crews are building dikes to keep any spill out of storm drains and the Pacific. Disneyland, about five miles away, sits outside the evacuation zone and remains open. The county health officer warned that a fruity odor signals exposure risk, with vapor inhalation capable of causing respiratory irritation and dizziness.

The cause of the tank’s instability is under investigation. GKN Aerospace, the UK-based aircraft parts supplier that runs the site, says it is coordinating with hazmat teams and local authorities, but officials have been blunt that failure is a matter of when, not if.
