arXiv Splits from Cornell to Become an Independent Nonprofit

After 25 years housed at Cornell University, arXiv formally becomes a standalone nonprofit on July 1, 2026. The preprint server frames the spinout as a long-considered move that grants it more organizational flexibility, and it stresses that the transition has been engineered to be invisible to the researchers who depend on it—authors and readers should notice no interruption to submission or access.

The operators reaffirm arXiv’s core commitments: free to read, free to submit, and equitable global access to new research. To manage the change, arXiv has published a dedicated FAQ covering its new leadership, governance structure, and special projects, promising to keep it current and to push major updates through its blog and social channels.
